Balanced 11-a-side teams

UPDATED · 5 MIN READ

Eleven-a-side means 22 people, and with that many players what unbalances a game isn't one player's level but how positions are spread: a team with all the defenders against one with all the midfielders isn't a contest. For fair teams, spread positions first, then balance physical, defence, attack and vision. Teamix does it in seconds and lets the group vote on the lineup.

What makes an 11-a-side game uneven?

With eleven per side, one weak player gets absorbed. What doesn't get absorbed is a whole line split badly:

  • Positions. If most defenders land on one side, or the midfielders bunch up on the other, one team has a shape and the other doesn't.
  • The lines, not just the total. Two teams can add up to the same and still have all the quality up front on one side and all at the back on the other.
  • Goalkeepers. On a full pitch, a real keeper against an outfield player in goal shows on every attack.
  • Fitness. A full-size pitch punishes the team that runs less, especially in the second half.

How do you organise a game for 22?

Amateur 11-a-side has its own problem before you even make teams: getting 22 together. More names on the list, more late drop-outs, more chat messages. Teamix helps with that part:

  • Paste the list from the chat and Teamix finds the players.
  • Up to 55 active players per group, so there's room for the regulars and the occasional ones.
  • Tick who's coming this week and generate teams with just them.
  • Share the teams in the chat and keep the score in the history.

For the full routine, see how to organise a weekly game.

How does Teamix handle it?

Teamix balances each option on all four skills and on positions at once, so each team gets a similar mix of defenders, midfielders and attackers. A player can have several positions, so someone who plays full-back or midfield counts for both.

With two goalkeepers, one goes to each team, and the stronger one to the weaker side. Players who need to stay together, stay together. More in the football team generator.

How does the group vote on the lineup?

With 22 people there are also 22 opinions about the teams. That's why Teamix doesn't give a single split: it suggests several balanced options, you send the public link to the chat and everyone votes for or against each option, with no download or account. You see the votes and confirm.

Illustrative example: the group votes between three options and the organiser confirms the favourite.

An example split

Twenty-two players, two goalkeepers. One of the options Teamix might suggest:

Illustrative example: the same shape on each side and the four skills nearly level.

11-a-side questions

Does everyone fit in one group?

Yes. A group holds up to 55 active players, more than twice what an 11-a-side game needs.

What if we don't get to 22?

Tick who's coming and generate anyway. Teamix makes teams from 6 players, so if there are 18 of you, you get nine against nine.

Can a player have several positions?

Yes. In 11-a-side it's common: someone who plays centre-back or midfield counts for both lines when balancing.
